Sun Glasses Acrostic Poem

Safe eyes in the sun.
Under protection of the glasses.
Nothing bad going in your eyes.

Going outdoors with new glasses.
Loving outdoors.
Amazing protection.
Super flashy glasses.
Sun Glasses.
Eyes in safe position.
Sun smart.

I chose to do a acoustic about sun glasses because my dad bought me new sun glasses because I had no sun glasses and summer is coming fast. I really like my new sun glasses. I hope you like my acrostic poem and I will try make my reflection longer.

V8 SuperCar Adventure

The V8 SuperCar Adventure

There was a v8 supercar event on the 6th of November to the 8th. The learning coaches decided that they could only take 60 people. 25 from LH1 25 from LH2 and 10 from LH 4. You had to bring 10 dollars to the office and also this permission slip with your parents signature. My sister and I got to go. It took about 1 hour to get to the supercar event but I guess it was worth it so I wont complain about it. When we got there it was already kinda full of people. As we entered sadly I already heard that someone had already left his hat on the bus :(. When we got in we sat under a giant tree to have a morning tea. While we all were eating I was hearing all the go past having this giant boom sound or a giant bang sound. When I just about finished my morning tea I heard a learning coach telling another child from a different group saying why the v8 cars go boom or bang. This is what I think they said, "The reason why the v8 cars go bang is because ahead on the track there is a bit of a sharp turn do they have to stop and when they stop there is still gas or fuel in the exhaust so when they accelerate again the gas comes out and it makes a boom sound." I also heard a speaker say that the cars where going at the speed at approximately 250 kph (which means klometers per hour). There was this kind of bridge going to the other side of the track. When my group got to the other side of the bridge, we saw some posters that we can take with us home. Unfortunately I only got one poster. There were some people getting autograph by drivers but I didn't get a autograph because I thought we didn't have time. We got back under the tree on the other side of the track and we had our lunch. Some of us finish early like me and my friend Ved. It was nice of him to give me a poster but he still had 2 more poster. We just sat there for a while but some people just played around. I got a bit bored of sitting do I went to my friend and we started talking. But I went back to sitting down and waiting. Before I died of boredom Mr. Hattie said it's about time to leave. But before we went back on the bus we checked if anyone needed the bathroom. As we entered Ved and I decided to sit on the same seat area. While we were going back to Ormiston Primary School we were playing truth or dare, I spy and just normally talking about things. After that we reached Ormiston and that's about it. I hope you like my story of my v8 supercar adventure.

OrmPS Official School Opening

Tommorow is the Ormiston Primary School official opening which is also the 23 of October. If you are a parent and are not able to come I will be telling you about some of the things that will be happening. Tommorow is not going to be a normal school day but it will be starting on the same time as everyday. The students will be coming to school and when school starts the learning coaches will do the roll then we will then do one final practice of our waiata for the opening. The parents will be able to come and learn with us at 10:00 am to 12:00 am. When it's 12:00 am, the school opening will start. The students will be singing Te Pu, Te Aroha and one more song. One of our special guest is William Pike. After that the students will activities to do. When the students have done all the activities, they will be going back to their habitat for home time. Just remember, school ends at 1pm. I hope you now know what some of the things that will be happening at our official school opening if you are not able to come.

Arborio

Arboria is a Luminarium made by a company called Architects of Air. My family got to go to Arboria on Sunday 11 October which was also the last day of the term 3 holiday. It was our first time for all of us. It was very interesting that from the outside it was red blue or green depending what area it was and it was mainly white. From the insde it was either green, red or blue. For example, in one of the rooms where there is green at the top and white all around on the outside, in the inside it was fully green. These are some of the pictures I took:

When you look at this from the outside it looks nothing like the inside for example
I hope you have enjoyed this blog post about Arboria.

Justin's Cities presentation Narrative Assessment

Learner: Justin                                                                Date: August 2015
Learning Area: iExplore                                     Learning Coach: John Dyer
Learning Observed
Justin recently developed an interest in cities of the world and chose to delight his Hapu group recently with a speech.. He enjoyed researching his topic and finding facts and information that was unusual and interesting. He chose a slide show to present his learning and engaged with the audience as he explained where in the world his chosen cities were and fun facts about each of them. The audience enjoyed finding out about these.

Justin knew the continents and where countries and their capital cities were located. He also answered some simple questions from the audience. I look forward to hearing about more wonders of the world in Term 4. Good Job Justin.
Evidence of learning
“And by the age of 3, I had travelled by myself to over 200 countries in a canoe made from a bathtub!”
Justin takes his learning about the world very seriously and he gets up close and personal explaining about many of the wonderful cities of the world to us all.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles being demonstrated

Thinking - Making sense of information, experiences and ideas.
Using language, symbols, and texts - Making sense of words, numbers and images.
Managing self - knowing when to lead, when to follow and when to act independently.
Relating to others - Interacting effectively in a range of contexts.
Participating and contributing - Being actively involved in school and the community

Curious
Collaborative
Connected
Capable
Next Learning Steps
Justin needs to aware of his audience and present research that is at their level as some learners were not able to engage with the language and content used. He needs to present with the enthusiasm that he has for his chosen area. Justin should also try to take his learning further by using his ideas and findings to launch an iExplore than goes beyond just a presentation. E.g. It would have been lovely to see this iExplore develop into running a day devoted to Justin’s favourite city and have all the learners get involved..

Willie, Henry & Justin's SCRATCH Jump Scare Learning Story - Sept 2015

Learner: Henry, Willie & Justin                                                   Learning Coach :DWilkes Date:  Sept 2015- Week 8-10                                                      Learning Area: Technology
Learning Observed
For the past few weeks the learners have been engaged in an innovation station!  The learners were given the choice of 4 provocations which included: creating an Ormibot from scratch, designing an object in Tinkercad to print in the 3D printer, designing a Science experiment or designing a series of code using Scratch and Makey Makey each of which would develop their capabilities.  Henry, Justin and Willie enjoyed the first week of ‘discovery learning’ where they had some choices of tasks to complete to help them get familiar with the coding programme ‘Scratch’ and the extension kit ‘Makey Makey’ and make connections to their prior knowledge.  They watched tutorials, tried out their predictions and played around with the various affordances of the equipment and programme.  They used the Makey Makey and Scratch to create a game console successfully.  Henry also supported other learners with using the Makey Makey- great collaboration and leadership.  For Week 9 and 10 the boys worked collaboratively to design and create a jump scare game using the Scratch programme.  In order to piece together the code successfully there was a lot of trialling and prototyping which showed the tenacity and resilience of Willie, Justin and Henry.  They showed their curiosity, thinking and managing self skills by looking at what others had done and making connections to what they wanted to achieve.  See their game here.  Willie even wrote a blog post about it already!
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • add another few levels to the game or create another, more complicated game
  • add more code to the game and share it on the LH1 website and/or teach another learner how to code using Scratch
  • complete your design plan more neatly
  • show the game to your family at home (BOO!)
  • use Makey Makey to extend the game

Acrostic Poem

Having fun at the holiday program.
Outdoors camping or listening to scary story's.
Loving the lovely weather.
Indoors playing games on technology.
Dancing around to overcome boredom.
At the beach.
Yawning before a good night sleep

I decided to write a acrostic poem about the holidays because the holidays are almost here. I cant wait until its the holidays.

Justin's Operation Big Science Learning Story

Learners:  Anjli, Katherine, Justin & Gary                            Learning Coach: DWilkes                                                                            Learning Area: Science                                                                            Sept: August 2015
Learning Observed
Anjli, Katherine, Justin & Gary had a blast conducting Operation Big Science in Week 7.  Thanks to the New World kit of ingredients.  Lots of learning resources as well about the Types of Mixtures and Chemical Reactions in Baking.  The learners learned that cooking is scientific fun and that the science capabilities are for life.  After initially watching a short video explaining the difference between chemical and physical changes the learners were challenged to explore their curiosity by examining their materials and discuss their priori knowledge about the materials and cooking with them.  Then they collaboratively devised an experiment - a cooking experiment, using the ingredients they selected including popcorn, chocolate, almonds and butter.  First they identified a question and then a hypothesis- making connections to their prior knowledge.  As a group they needed to plan their method too.  During the cooking they made observations- noting what they notice, think and wonder.  Justin did well to lead parts of the experiment. They also practiced their capability at measuring while completing their recipe.  It was collaborative and delicious!

Next Learning Steps
  • complete their Operation Big Science experiment plan with observations and explanations
  • write a reflective blog post about the experience
  • use more specific measurements when writing a recipe
  • give detailed observations about what you noticed before, during and after tent on the LH1 blog post about Operation Big Science

Year’s Biggest Storm/Typhoon

storm

The world's most powerful storm of the year is
headed towards Taiwan, Japan and China.
This typhoon has left behind major
destruction in the Northern Marianas Islands.
Guess what, that destroyer has speeds up to
354kph, isn't that fascinating?
What would you do if you just got out
of your house and out of nowhere you see
this typhoon coming towards you at the speeds
up to 354kph flipping every single car in its way
into the air? I would try and got to a safety bunker or
a really secure and safe place. I bet you would
do the same thing as me. I hope you find this
post fascinating.

Justin's Animal Habitat- Digitize it Learning Story - August 2015

Learner: Justin                                                     Learning Coach: DWilkes
Date: August 2015                                                                       Learning Area:  Science
Learning Observed
This term the LH1 learners have been learning about animals, adaptations and habitats.  They were fortunate enough to go on a field trip to the zoo where the animals captured the curiosity of Justin.  He has been building his language and developing his understandings of the many ways the natural world can be represented.  Justin is very able to recognise that living things are suited to their particular habitat and can discuss the adaptations of specific animals like the chimpanzee. He not only recognises that all living things have certain requirements so they can stay alive, he can identify and discuss these for a variety of animals.

Justin used www.buildyourwildself.com to create an amazing and unusual animal.  The learners were instructed that they needed to create a habitat that would be suitable for their imaginary creature.  Justin opted for the ‘Digitize It’ option knowing that he wanted to design the habitat in Tinkercad to demonstrate his capability at using it.  Justin went through a rigorous design process that involved connecting with information through researching to create a fact file on the Scorcher, drawing a draft diagram of what the habitat would look like and then creating it in a digital tool -which ended up being Tinkercad because Justin demonstrated perseverance and learned this new tool brilliantly.

Justin collaborated very well- listening to others, supporting others with his knowledge and asking questions.  He assisted other learners who were using Tinkercad as he learned quickly.  When it was time to share his learning, he presented the ‘’scorcher’ habitat confidently to all of the Learning Coaches and learners in LH1.  You can see his assessment here.
Evidence of learning
Next Learning Steps

  • write a reflective blog post about their learning and share with parents
  • create a product of their learning eg. iMovie to show his Minecraft to others
  • create a more detailed diagram with labels that is represented in their final product
  • learn more about the chimpanzee by reading books and websites about it

The Speech Final

Who won the speech finals? Hi, Today I will be telling you about the speech finals in the multi space at ormiston. So after habitat hui on Monday, LH1, LH2 and went to the Multi Space for the speech finals. Some of the finalists were Kevin, Mohamed, Seth, Aleena and Jahnavi. Kevin's speech was about cooking and my favourite parts were when he used humour. Mohamed's speech was about the haka and what I liked was that he was signing and a learning coach was saying what he was signing. Seth was about skate boarding I think. Aleena's was about why she should be the principle of ormiston primary. It was interesting how she described what she would do if she was principle. Jahnavi was about why we should have school uniform. LH2 had to go early so they didn't get to hear all of them. While LH1 had to wait for the judges to decide the winner we were answering question. One of them were "What would you do if you were princible?" I was going to say "No School!" But they didn't pick me. Now the judges were ready. In third place came Mohamed, in second place came Aleena and finally in first place came... Drum roll please. Jahnavi!

My Speech

Hi, I will be showing you my speech and I hope you like it and please give me feedback.

What causes species to become endangered. If you don’t know yet, well im going to tell you. The 3 main reasons that endangered species are getting endangered is because of habitat loss, natural causes and illegal hunting.

Firstly, one of the most common ways of how endangered animals get endangered is habitat loss. For example, the mountain gorilla is having trouble because of habitat loss and there is less than 790 mountain gorillas in the world just because of habitat loss. People are rapidly destroying so that makes it harder for gorillas to sustain their lives. Did you also know that habitat loss poses the greatest threat to species.

Secondly, over the past 200 years, humans have made significant changes to natural environments all around the globe, and most of these changes have negatively affected the wildlife. That mean numbers of species are headed towards extinction. One example for natural causes is global warming. Some species didn’t just get endangered, they got extinct.

Thirdly, leopards and bears are being hunted illegally by poachers. The hunters ignore the government and go hunting for species that they're not supposed to hunt then the species they’re hunting get endangered.

For these reasons, I hope you now understand how species are getting endangered.

Collaboration iActive Week

Hello, this week in my opinion is special because our iActive for only this week have changed. What have changed is that we are doing Shrinking Vessel, Cross the River, Human Knot, Mine Field and Water Bucket challenge. My favourite one would be shrinking vessel because it was easy to play, easy to setup and also fun to play. I'm pretty sure that everyone else loves this week's iActive the fact that it changed for for this week. The sad thing for me is that I wasn't able to play mine field because it was a rainy day. I wonder what mine field is like?

Zoo Learning Story - July 2015

Learner: Justin L, Henry, Willie, Rohullah and Nehaal
Learning Coach: DWilkes                              Date: July 30, 2015
Learning Area: Science
Learning Observed
Our trip to the zoo was a learning adventure for Justin, Henry, Willie, Rohullah and Nehaal.  The boys were split into small groups while we toured the zoo visiting animals from around the world and observing their behaviour and habitats.  The boys loved seeing the red pandas, reptiles, primates and the African mammals.  While the observed the different enclosures they were prompted to ‘notice’ the animal habitats and discuss and describe the zoo habitat each animal lived in.  They all asked lots of questions and were eager to move from area to area.   Willie and Nehaal wanted to know why people poach animals? Justin and Henry were curious about the size, shape and colour of the elephant tooth and Rohullah and Peanut the Pukeko were fascinated by the colours of the flamingos.  They all thought is was very amusing that one of the elephants had the same name as their classmate “Anjli”.  The boys were attentive, collaborative and curious.and enjoyed the opportunity to talk about what they already knew about animals, their adaptations and what they need to survive.
Evidence of learning

Key Competencies/Vision Principles
During the animal encounters with the zoo keepers the boys demonstrated their curiosity when they got to touch the cheetah pelt and skull.  They wanted to know how the zoo keepers got them. All of the boys were managing self during the zoo visit by staying with their groups, buddies and listening to instructions.  They was collaborative and participated and contributed in all 3 animal encounters: flamingos, cheetahs and elephants.  Justin, Henry and Rohullah enjoyed watching Willie and Nehaal connect to their learning from school when they got to hold the elephant artefacts at the front of the encounter and because they could tell us which continent a lot of the animals came from.
Next Learning Steps
Visit the Auckland zoo website to learn more about the animals and their habitats.
-share and contribute ideas and questions with the wider group
-use zoo learning and wonderings in their Habitat Design learning adventure when we go back to school
-make connections to their observations of the animals habitats at the zoo to their natural habitats
